Government invests $110 million in fraud prevention
The Australian Government has continued its focus on preventing NDIS fraud, announcing an extra $110.4 million to crack down on swindling and deceit within the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). This latest investment builds on an earlier $83.9 million and aims to protect NDIS funding from being misused, ensuring participants get the support they need.
Since its launch in February 2024, the Crack Down on Fraud programme has already made significant progress. Using improved systems and working closely with the Fraud Fusion Taskforce (FFT), the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has flagged over 2,100 providers for questionable claiming behaviours. These providers now face manual payment reviews and, in many cases, audits or criminal investigations.
These efforts have made a real difference, preventing the misuse of over $400 million and saving the scheme an additional $200 million. The system enhancements also make it easier for participants and nominees to access secure digital platforms while maintaining the integrity of identity and claims data.
Minister for the NDIS, the Hon. Bill Shorten MP, said the extra funding will allow the NDIA to keep building on its success, with further improvements planned for 2025.
“We’re making it harder for fraudsters to exploit the NDIS and ensuring funds go to those who need them most,” he said.
This investment underscores the government’s commitment to protecting the NDIS for future generations, supporting participants, and ensuring taxpayers’ money is used effectively.
